Which width fits your CAT 299D

450x86x60 — 450 mm (18") wide, 86 mm pitch, 60 links
400x86x60 — 400 mm (16") wide, 86 mm pitch, 60 links

These are not interchangeable by preference — the width your machine takes is set by the roller frame and sprocket it left the factory with. Wider tread floats better on soft ground and spreads ground pressure; narrower runs cheaper, turns easier and clears tight spots. Measure the existing track across the tread face before you order.

Tread choice for the CAT 299D

Size gets the track on the machine; tread decides how it works and how long it lasts. What we stock for this one:

All-Terrain — everything in between. A compromise tread when the machine moves between surfaces
Staggered Block — mixed dirt and gravel. Block stability with better cleanout than a straight block
C-Block — concrete, asphalt and hard-packed ground. Longest wear life and the least vibration on hard surfaces
Multi-Bar — mud, snow and soft ground. Deep bar lugs bite and shed material instead of packing up
X-Terrain — the worst ground you have. Aggressive lugs for mud, slope and loose fill
Z-Max — soft and slippery ground. An aggressive zig-zag with more bite

If the machine splits its time between surfaces, buy for the ground you are on most — a hard-surface tread on constant mud will spin, and a bar tread on concrete will wear out in half the hours.

Undercarriage parts for the CAT 299D

Rollers, idlers and sprockets wear on the same clock as the track. Fitting new rubber over a hooked sprocket or a seized roller is the fastest way to lose the new track — check these while the tracks are off:

How these wear

CTLs run high ground speed and counter-rotate all day, which is what eats edge lugs and drive lugs first. Replace in pairs where you can: a new track running against a stretched one loads the drive unevenly and you will feel it in the steering.
