John Deere 317G vs 325G — Track Size, Specs & Which to Choose

John Deere 317G vs 325G — Track Size, Specs & Which to Choose

The John Deere 317G and 325G are two of the most common CTLs on job sites, especially in the Southeast. They share the same platform but differ in size, power, and track specifications. Here's how they compare.

Track Size Comparison

The 317G runs a 400x86x52 rubber track (16 inches wide, B-guide). The 325G steps up to a 450x86x55 track (18 inches wide, B-guide). The wider track on the 325G distributes its extra weight across a larger footprint, keeping ground pressure comparable between the two machines.

Machine Specs Side by Side

The 317G produces about 65 hp and has a rated operating capacity around 1,750 lbs. The 325G bumps up to 74 hp with a rated capacity of approximately 2,300 lbs. If you're running heavy attachments like mulchers, brush cutters, or full buckets of wet material, the 325G gives you more margin.

For lighter work like grading, landscaping, and general dirt moving, the 317G is more than capable and costs less to operate — including lower track replacement costs due to the smaller size.

Tread Pattern Recommendations

Both machines are available with C-Block, Zig-Zag, and X-Terrain tread patterns. For general construction, C-Block on either machine. For land clearing, site prep, or muddy conditions, Zig-Zag. The choice doesn't change between the two — it's driven by your working surface, not the machine.
