- Idlers: side play, leakage, flange damage and alignment.
- Rollers: bearing play, leakage, flat spots, binding and damaged flanges.

- Tension system: usable adjustment travel and the ability to hold the manufacturer's specified tension.
- Frame and guards: bent steel, packed debris or contact marks that could force the belt off line.
