Not automatically. A new rubber track does not require a new sprocket simply because the track is new. The sprocket should be replaced when its wear profile is outside the machine manufacturer's service limits or when it is no longer engaging the drive lugs cleanly.
Signs a sprocket may need replacement
- Hooked or swept-back tooth profile
- Sharp or pointed teeth
- Uneven tooth wear around the sprocket
- One-sided tooth wear
- Track ratcheting or skipping under load
- Fresh drive-lug damage on a correctly fitted track
Why worn sprockets matter more with new tracks
A new belt has fresh drive-lug geometry. A worn sprocket can contact those lugs incorrectly, concentrating load and accelerating damage. That is why the old sprocket should be inspected before the new track is tensioned and put into service.
Do not replace sprockets by an arbitrary schedule
There is no universal “every other track change” rule that applies to every machine and operating environment. Replace based on measured wear, engagement quality and the machine manufacturer's service information.
